What are Dentures?

Dentures are removable appliances that replace missing teeth and help restore a smile. These dental appliances feature replacement teeth fixed to a strong acrylic base that matches the color of the patient’s gums. Today’s dentures are functional and comfortable.

What are the Different Types of Dentures?

There are partial dentures and complete dentures. People who are missing some teeth can benefit from partial dentures while those missing all their teeth can use complete dentures.

There are two types of complete dentures: conventional and immediate. Dentists make conventional dentures after the teeth are gone and the gum tissue has begun to heal – usually 8 to 12 weeks after any tooth removal.

Dentists make immediate dentures in advance so that the patient can wear the denture immediately after teeth are removed. The main disadvantage to immediate dentures is that they require more adjustment during the healing process.

Anyone who is missing one or more teeth can benefit from dentures, as dentures can make it easier to eat and speak. Dentures are appropriate for people who have lost teeth due to gum disease, tooth decay or injury.

It is important to replace missing teeth, as the remaining teeth will shift, causing an inability to bite and chew properly. Dentures also support cheeks and lips so that the face does not sag, which makes a person look older. Dentures can even improve the look of a smile by replacing discolored, small or misshapen teeth.
